I am looking at AC to make our next vacation spot. I have read the goods and bads, about AC, and the goods seam to win. My question is that we (family- a group about 6 couples) went on all cruises in the past. Liking the atmosphere, but not the pace, we our looking to park our butts for a week on some tropical beach. Does AC have a night-life equal to a cruise? Around what time does the restaurants and bars close? What hotel/resort should I look into?

If nightlife comparable to a cruise ship is part of your decision criteria, you are (IMHO) absolutely in the wrong part of the Caribbean. You'll find laid-back bars and fun restarants, but, unless you can envision yourself at the renowned "chicken drop," San Pedro may not be your destination.

AC has a mellow night life, with local bands and the occasional DJ night. But not like the shows that are on a cruise ship. Folks that go to AC go for the snorkeling, diving, beach activities, mellow lifestyle, friendly locals, and outdoor activities. I'm thinking that Cancun might be more your speed?

HCking, We go to AC for the snorkeling and partying. We are 45-50 years old and have no problem finding entertainment.
Some of the resorts and hotels have a closing time of midnight due to noise control but there are local clubs that can entertain the young at heart after that. Have you ever heard of Punta dancing. It's hard to describe but very entertaining even if you just watch. The young partiers don't start until 11p-12p. They start at the hotel resort type places where the live music is. Then head to Big Daddy's or Iguana's. Both of the late parties are disco type where the Punta is. I've read they also have mud wrestling somewhere and there's also kareoke at Tarzan's on Thursdays. The list could go on and on. All very fun.
This information isn't first hand. The places that stay open til midnight are usually good enough for us. I just wanted you to know that there is a great night life there.

Big Daddy's, Jaguar's and Iguana's are open until at least 4 a.m. However, Jaguar's and Iguana's weren't open every night and I never did figure out exactly which was which, though they were open on the weekends. Big Daddy's was open every night. Sometimes the places were rocking and sometimes they were more quiet, people wise that is, the music is always rocking.
A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

Thank you for all the info, very helpful. As far as saying we like atmosphere I was only talking about having a little fun after dinner. How about hotels/resorts can anyone give some good advise on sleeping arangements?
