Popular Pilot Missing; Feared Dead After Plane Crash in Panama

Believed to be missing and feared dead, well-known pilot forty-nine-year-old Jose Milo Paz has not been seen or heard from since Sunday. His family in San Pedro Town has been bombarded with messages of condolences and sympathies. On Tuesday night, reports surfaced that Paz died in a plane crash on Sunday evening somewhere in the mountains of Panama. Paz, who has over thirty years of experience as a pilot, took time off from Tropic Air where he worked to pilot a private charter on Sunday after which the crash occurred. It is said that Paz's charred remains were discovered along with the remains of another individual. With no official identification or confirmation, the Paz family in San Pedro Town is clinging to hope that he will return home, walk through the doors and greet them. But as the days go by, their hopes have begun diminishing. News Five's Hipolito Novelo reports.

Where is Jose Milo Paz? The popular San Pedrano pilot with thirty years of experience has not been heard from or seen since Sunday. Reports of his disappearance surfaced on Tuesday night on social media, taking off with such a speed that by next morning messages of condolences to the family were being expressed. The family, however, is clinging to hope that Paz is still alive, especially since not of the online reports have been officially confirmed by either Belizean or Panamanian authorities. Unconfirmed online reports suggest that Paz perished in a plane crash somewhere near Panama on Sunday evening. According to reports, Paz took time off from his employment to pilot a private plane from Panama. Further reports suggest that the plane crashed somewhere in the mountains of the Central America country, killing Paz and another person who was in the aircraft.

Voice of: Javier Williams, Brother-in-law

"We got a called that there was an accident somewhere. At that point, we did not know if it was in the country or out of the country. All we know now is from what we have been hearing was that there was a plane crash around Panama. I guess Milo was the pilot. There was another pilot in there. But there is no confirmation as we do not have anybody or anything to prove that it was Milo. I know his wife has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and we are waiting for a response from them."

Paz was much liked and known in San Pedro. He is described as a caring and easy going man who loved his community. In 2010, Paz was part of an organized group, looking for thirty-seven-year-old Maria Plaza, a missing flight attendant who was murdered.

"The young lady left Corona Del Mar at seven-fifty-eight and we know that because it is on their video surveillance camera.

More recently, in April of this year, Paz who is considered an aviation pioneer raised issues concerning the Belize City Municipal Airstrip.

"As you know, I have been flying since 1988 and I have a little bit of experience. The municipal airstrip, after it was redone and the investment was done, the main runway started to sink just like Caye Caulker, except that this one started to sink just over a year now and it was very, very bad that this weekend they had to close down to do some emergency repairs."

While Paz's death has not been confirmed, politicians such as Manuel Heredia Junior, Tracey Taegar Panton, Francis Fonseca, and San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero have all expressed deepest sympathies and condolences on the "passing" of Paz. His employer, Tropic Air President, John Grief the Third even spoke of Paz in the past tense.

John Grief III, President, Tropic Air

"He owned his own airplane and was one of the pioneers in the San Pedro-Tikal day tour. In those days Tropic and Milo would take a load of passengers to Tikal, wait all day with them and then bring them back. He was a pioneer in that. He was a smart businessman; he was involved in money changing at one time before the rules changed. He was on time off on Tropic and we just got confirmation that it is confirmed that he is dead in a plane crash that side."

Until official confirmation is provided of Paz's death, his family has hopes that he would reappear alive and well.

Voice of: Javier Williams

"We are hoping that everything that we have heard it is not true, that he is still alive and that we will see him walking through the door. We are all hopeful that he will come home, come back; walk through that door with that big smile."

Paz survived an accident twenty years ago. He put his piloting duties on pause for sometime before returning to his skies and becoming one of the most senior pilots at Tropic Air and in Belize. According to Tropic Air President John Grief the Third, Paz was on a life insurance plan and even though he was not on duty at the time of the crash, his insurance will be paid.

[Linked Image] The Paz family in San Pedro Town has received confirmation of the death of forty-nine-year-old Jose Milo Paz. The veteran pilot and aviation pioneer died in a plane wreck in the mountains in Panama sometime on October seventh. While the news of his death had been widely reported, the Paz family was hopeful until today. Paz was a much liked San Pedro resident who was also active in politics. The People's United Party's Belize Rural South caucus said in a statement, "Milo was a stalwart P.U.P. who believed in the philosophies of the party and was always willing to go the extra mile for the love of his community We stand together as we await further announcements. May Milo Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory." While the family has received confirmation, there are missing details as to what went wrong on that unfortunate Sunday. Paz is said to have been piloting a private plane originating from Guatemala and heading to Panama. Inside the plane with Paz was another pilot who also perished. His identity has not been confirmed. The Paz family is making arrangements to import his remains for burial service. The family learnt of Paz's demise on Tuesday and up until today, had been unable to confirm all details of the accident.

Milo Paz family files missing report

Despite reports that 49-year-old San Pedro pilot Jose 'Milo' Aljemiro died in a plane crash accident in October of this year, his family officially filed a missing person notice with the Belize Police Department on Friday, December 7th. Paz was reportedly flying a chartered aircraft from Panama when he apparently crash and died. But up-to-date, no body has been recovered, and no official report from The Panamanian Aviation Authorities has been issued on the incident.

The missing report from the police indicates 46-year-old Ermijines Paz, Belizean Businesswoman, reported that on October 3, 2018 at 3PM, she dropped off her husband Jose Aljemiro Paz at the Airstrip in San Pedro, and up to the time of making this report, he had not been seen or heard from. Paz' wife further stated that on October 9, 2018, she received information that her husband was in an accident and died; however, there is no confirmation if he in fact is dead or alive.

Police continue investigating the matter, and ask the general public to contact the nearest police station if they have information of Paz' whereabouts.

Pilot Reported Dead, Family Reports Him Dead Two Months Later

Two months ago, the media received credible information that Tropic Air pilot Milo Paz had died in Panama while doing private charter work. His boss at Tropic John Greif confirmed that he had heard the same and that Paz was on leave at the time.

But, we never found any news or police reports from Panama to confirm that - and, now, there's a new wrinkle in the story: his wife reported him missing on Friday in San Pedro. AND SHE TOO TOLD POLCIE THAT SHE'd heard he was dead, but had no confirmation.

Now, how do you report an allegedly dead man missing? And is it all just for insurance? That's what we asked police today:...

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Her husband Mr. Jose Aljemiro Paz, also known as Milo Paz, departed San Pedro from the 3rd October 2018 - that he was to do some business at Flores, Peten, Guatemala. She mentioned that she had taken her husband to the San Pedro Municipal airstrip and that was the last time that she had seen her husband. She also mentioned that after he departed from San Pedro that both of them were communicating through messenger until the 7th of October and that was the last time that she actually had a text message from Mr. Paz."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Was she able to say what was in that text?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Basically between husband and wife communication."

Reporter
"2 months after, the wife is saying he is missing?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Well that was the information that was being circulated on most of the social media and on the news. However, I know that the Belize Police Department has liaised with Guatemalan authorities and the Panamanian authorities to verify whether or not Mr. Paz was indeed in Las Flores, Peten and in Panama, but so far we have not received any response from them since we just sent that report on Friday after the female filed the report."

Reporter
"Is it just a formality for insurance purposes why the report was just made that he's missing since they were of the belief that he had passed away long before?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"We do not believe that it is only because of insurance policy; we do not even know if he is insured or not."

Reporter
"Who informed the family that Mr. Paz may have been perished in that aircraft accident?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"That is just information and rumors that began to surface in San Pedro. That is from where she obtained the information. Up to now no information suggesting or pointing us to that Mr. Paz had died in any accident. We, the Belize Police Department have no information of any accident so far involving him."

As you heard, police have contacted their Guatemalan and Panamanian counterparts. His wife told police that it is not the first time Paz had taken this sort of trip to fly charters.
