PUP heads to court over list of electors in Belize Rural South constituency
A legal team from the Belize Rural South (BRS) People's United Party (PUP) was at the San Pedro Magistrate Court on Wednesday, November 21st, petitioning for the removal of 15 persons registered to vote in the BRS constituency. The PUP team argues that those 15 registered electorates do not reside on Ambergris Caye and thus, they should not be eligible to vote in BRS. Defending the electorates was a team from the United Democratic Party (UDP), along with an attorney, who tried to justify the electorates as legitimate residents on the island. Both sides presented their evidence before the Magistrate, and now the anticipated results of the case will be revealed on Wednesday, December 5th, when an official decision will be made.

North Ambergris Caye's Police Sub-Station vandalized and in need of renovations
Over a year ago, the San Pedro Police Department inaugurated a police booth north of San Pedro Town, in an attempt to render better-policing services to the northern island community. Although police claim to be getting satisfying results, the police sub-station is due for much-needed renovations, and recently, was vandalized. One of the supporting posts at the entrance of the structure is broken, and it seems to be supporting the weight of the building barely. The facility has electricity, but it still lacks a bathroom. However, it is often used as a makeshift stop for officers patrolling the area daily.

Keynote Remarks by Senator the Hon Carla Barnett PhD CBE Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development at the Launch of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender based Violence November 23, 2018
Thanks to Special Envoy for inviting me to be here and to say a few words today on the launch of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. This campaign officially begins on November 25 every year which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It ends on 10 December, which is Human Rights Day. This year the launch on November 23 coincides with International Children Day, which is a poignant reminder that where there is abuse of women, there usually is abuse of children as well. UN Women continues to point out that "violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains one of the most widespread and persistent human rights violations in our world today. Still, it remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it."

CARICOM Development Fund must be replenished urgently
The CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) has stimulated higher incomes and expanded trade for the Caribbean region. However, you cannot pour from an empty cup, therefore members states are being urged to put their monies forward to ensure the Fund can continue to deliver for the islands, and can look into forging partnerships to garner more benefits for small and medium enterprises as well. Over the past year, the Fund has approved financing for the development of the village tourism programme in St. Lucia and honey production in Belize, building on similar ongoing programmes benefitting SMEs in Belize, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Kitts and Nevis, mainly through the national development banks. Many of these projects have enabled the adoption of green technologies in production.
