In observance of March 25th - The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, under the theme "Ending Slavery's legacy of racism, the imperative of strengthening justice and resilience in Afro descendant communities in the Americas in the face of Covid-19" the Museum of Belize honors our ancestors who suffered and died under the brutality of their enslavement by providing the public access to a Virtual Tour of our enSLAVEd: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in Belize Exhibit at Artsteps. We are also featuring Cultural Guardian Emmeth Young and Belizean Painter Gayla, who's body of work reflect the spirit and determination of being Afro in the Americas.

Today March 26th, 2021; we honor Belizean artist Gayla.

Titled "I Am" this virtual exhibit by Afro Descendant, Belizean Artist Gayla features a 17 piece collection of Belizean portraits in acrylic paint on canvas. Most prolific is Gayla's representation of the image of Afro Descendants themselves. Her work with Belizean Youth to foster the Belizean identity through self-awareness, artistic creativity and expression embodies the resilience of the ancestors and the grace of their descendants who continue to boldly triumph in the face racism and prejudice.
