Anyone have kayaks for sale. I would like to buy one. If it is banged up and cheap..all the better. PS. Banged up doesn't mean that it sinks.

I believe most of the mooring buoys are outside the reef. They are for the dive boats to tie up to while their customers dive on the outer side of the reef where the water gets deep. The water can get pretty choppy where the waves break the reef. Be careful.

There is one dive site inside the reef that I know about. It is Mexico Rocks and it is north of San Pedro up by Journey's End and Gaz Cooper's resort. It is a bunch of coral heads in the shallow water. I can't remember if there is a mooring bouy there. There probably is. It might be the ideal snorkel spot as the water is about 15' deep if I recall correctly and it's inside the reef where the water is calmer. There are snorkel charters that go to this site and I believe some of the dive shops take their new customers to this site to check their diving skills before taking them out into the deep water, so you might end up kayaking out there only to find someone else already tied up there.

If you are snorkelling inside the reef, I think towing the kayak would not be a problem, but take a dive flag and make sure you and your kayak are easily visible as there is alot of boat traffic inside the reef.

Bill,

Talk to Chris and Jo at Sailsports, their friend Troy is a dealer for Hobie and has brought down Hobie kayaks for purchase in the recent past. They also rent Kayaks in front of Holiday Hotel

Well, we're here, and we kayaked most of the way out to the reef directly from Xanadu yesterday morning to see for ourselves. As we go to within about 100 feet of where we saw the water breaking over the reef, the water changed quickly from very smooth to three foot waves close together, and there are no buoys in sight. So, we turned around, and will take the boat tours to snorkel with the rest of the tourists.

Probably on other days (we will try it again) and other places along the reef we would not run in to this, but I understand now why it is not a very common thing to do.

I don't know about the other kayak places, but the Costa Maya Reef Resort on the north side of the island has little anchors with their kayaks (just make sure you anchor in the sand & not the coral)

I'd be somewhat concerned about a "little" anchor holding a kayak in position, given some of the currents.
