THE FIRST TAXI: This rustic yet picturesque building was the first office near the grass airstrip in the 1970's where tickets were sold for Maya Airways which offered one or two daily round trips from Belize City to San Pedro. The office belonged to Coral Beach Hotels, a line of San Pedro owned hotels for Alan Forman. Fido Nunez, Felipe Paz, Chico Gomez, Samuel and Florentino Gonzalez. There were two taxi Land Rover Jeeps in San Pedro, one by Don Nando Trejo and one by Mash Salazar. Hey, that's young Mash as taxi driver. Photo courtesy of the Ambergris Today.
Maya Airways Agency / Ticket Counter
(1984). Jayson Forman:
I remember when I took my first flight on Maya Airways’ odd looking aircrafts. The receptionist was very kind and flashed her huge dimples when she smiled (Nelly or Mellie Badillo?). I think she was my close friend, Martha Badillo’s older sister.
She could tell I was nervous and hesitant and she assured me that I was gonna be fine and it would be over before I knew it. She was right of course.
By the way, there was absolutely no fence between the airstrip and the school behind it. Drawing by Jayson Forman. Malena Badillo:
Her name is Emerita (Mellie) Badillo . and her mom Mrs. Martha Badillo is your dad's cousin.
