It is saddening to reflect that no great ancient races inhabited these lovely Isles, that no great man ever lived, and laboured, and worked, and fought, and died, and left a name for posterity to honour and to cherish as a ‘household word’; that no time-honoured tower or world-famed temple, or pilgrim haunted shrine ever stood on yonder cape—in short, that the past is all a blank.
US President James "Jimmy" Earl Carter Jr. visited Ambergris Caye, 1996

He visited his close friend the late Right Hon. George Price in Belize City and headed to San Pedro for some R&R. He walked the sandy streets of San Pedro Town, stayed at Rendezvous and flew with Tropic Air. It looks like Jeff Reitz (spelling) shaking the President's hand. And of course that is Glenn Godfrey with the head of luscious locks.

The late George Price and President Jimmy Carter worked together in The World Peace Movement for many years after the Carter Presidency ended. They travelled to many countries to oversee the conduct of National Elections. President Carter also led a Humanitarian Movement named Habitat For Humanity which built houses for the poor in many countries, including Belize. His visit to Belize, I believe, was for vacational purposes. I recall that the Presedent's visit also took him to a resort somewhere in the Maskall area. Ixcacao Chocolate hosted former President Carter for a tasting and chocolate making tour.

Trivia: in preparation for when he visited Ambergris Caye, the security team that went ahead had all the coconuts removed from the tall trees as potential hazards.

Alfonso Avilez: i was at fisheries at d time n Lutjanus was used to transport d Secret service detail to Journeys End about 1 week b4 he arrived. The late Romy Badillo Sr was d Captain. We had to go thru investigation before they even arrived.

In the year 1996 former President of the United States Of America, James "Jimmy" Earl Carter Jr. made a Visit to Belize. He is the only U.S. President ever to do so. The above photo shows President James Carter meeting with Hon. George Price and Hon. Said Musa. The Hon. Dr. Manuel Esquivel was the Prime Minister of Belize at that time. Hon. Said Musa became Prime Minister of Belize two years later, in 1998.
