Maya Mountain Research Farm
Mission: to research and demonstrate – within an ecosystem context (just like a natural ecosystem, an agricultural ecosystem’s ability to function with integrity is based on the composition and interconnectivity of its constituent organisms) – locally appropriate (to southern Belize, lowland humid tropics, and its specificities such as limited road access, limited grid electricity, extreme wet and dry seasons, hurricane potential, etc.) alternative technologies (such as renewable energy and green-building techniques) and sustainable agricultural techniques.
Rufous-tailed Hummingbird sitting on its nest

What a wonderful find! This hummingbird has expertly built her nest in a young cacao tree located near the house.

All hummers on nest are females - for this species the female has little or no green on throat. Then combined that with shape, lenght and colour of bill - that pretty much eliminates any other species

Maya Legend of Hummingbirds

There was a day when the Yuumstilo'ob were forming all the animals and insects of the earth in mud, suddenly the material ran out and they decided to continue with a jade stone, molded a small thin arrow, gave it life and instantly It flew away, so the hummingbird formed, it was beautiful in every way, the sun made its feathers shine, but the man wanted to catch him and the Yuumstilo'ob got angry saying that if someone caught him, then the hummingbird would die, since then never No one dared to try, they just let them fly quietly and do their job in peace, letting men admire its beauty and speed.
