Front Street in Punta Gorda before the 1945 hurricane

This picture of P.G., probably taken before the 1945 hurricane that destroyed about 80% of properties with one death, shows the Front Street view from its curve near the original Carlton Johnson's Store (then Dreamlight Club at far left) facing south towards Claver Church. Note the number of piers, public latrines homes, and businesses that lined that part of the street. Tall coconut trees also used to be plentiful around town, as seen behind the buildings. Apparently the seawall had not yet been built.

Cesar Artinez: I remember a long building in front of Minister Mike Espat's house in the early 60s a German gentleman used to repair shoes there; that building looks like it to me. I think his name was Mr. Felna.
