Top photo: Shoreline view of Front Street in P.G. facing south of public pier, 1970s. Buildings from right to left include medical doctor’s residence, Labor Department office, Cine Caribena (cinema), Vernon’s Store bodega, Hotel Isabel, Nazarene Church, 2 private residences. The building behind the vat is the hotel. Following that would be the market, not shown. Those were the days when this area was the hub of all business. Much has changed since then.

Ivan Avilez: I remember prior to the 1970’s there was a Chinese store named Genaro Lam and a bakery run by Mr Cecil Coleman better known as Soft Pedals. These were located between Isabel and the doctor’s quarters.

Lesley-Anne Wakefield KT: The Government Rest house has been taken down. Punta Gorda was the very last one to have a Government Rest house in it. Government Rest houses were built for government officers who were visiting the districts away from their home offices. You could get a room for about $10.00 Bzd. They were meant to cost the officers as little as possible. As their pay was quite low. These Rest Houses were in essence government hotels.
