September 21st, 1981 was the date in which Belize gained its independence from Great Britain. Proud Belizeans from all over the country become eager in anticipation of all the activities that take place in the two weeks leading to Independence Day. It's the biggest birthday bash in the country; a celebration of our country's freedom. This freedom now allows each and everyone of us the right to voice our opinion and create the beautiful Belize that we want. San Pedro Town Board has planned two weeks of activities for the community to commemorate and celebrate September 10th, the Battle of St. George's Caye, and Independence Day, September 21st. This year's theme for the celebrations in San Pedro will be, "Historic Past/Glorious Future." The San Pedro Town Board has organized a series of activities and events that significantly address the students and youth of the island. The celebrations begin on September 9th with the Miss San Pedro Beauty Pageant. September 10th, marks the bicentennial celebrations of the Battle of St. George's Caye which we will celebrate with an all day jump up after the parade. The highly anticipated Carnival Parade will take place in Belize City on September 11th. The parade is one of the most lively, featuring an array of highly festive and colorful costumes, music and people. The Town Board has scheduled parades, talent nights and educational seminars for the pre schools, primary schools, as well as for the high school students. Presentation by Belizean educators, at the seminars, will educate the students about the meaning behind the September celebrations and other topics such as patriotism, health, sports, crime and much more. The celebrations will come to an end on the September 21st with the Midnight Torch and Flag Ceremony and Independence Dance early Monday morning. During the day on Monday, the Independence Day Ceremony, crowning of the new Miss San Pedro, Independence Day Parade and an all day jump up will take place. A complete schedule of events with time and place are found above.
