With all the research we've been doing we can not figure out why no pictures ever show people on the beach sand or swimming other than at the Split. Is that because of sand fleas and too shallow water?

That is because the reef is so close evryone goes there to swim! Actually, we have a few beachy areas to suntan on, but, your second guess was accurate, too shallow and seagrass abounds. Still pretty sweet.

Allie is right, Caye Caulker has some beach areas that are great for hanging out and sun bathing. The Belize Barrier Reef is approx. 3/4 of a mile from Caye Caulker, thus not a lot of wave action to create a sandy beach. We do have some sandy beach areas, nonetheless. Sand fleas come and go and at times are gone for months , just like mosquitos. FYI: Belize is called Mosquito Coast because of Mosquito Indians.
