FISHING REPORT

April 28, 2013 - May 4, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy skies opened up to a beautiful week of sunshine with occasional rain showers.

Air Temperature: High 84, low 72. Winds: NW 5 - 15 at the beginning of the week, then went ESE 10 - 20, arriving at our wonderful E 5 - 10

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s

Moonphase: Full Moon on the 25th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Ian and Andy were here from Scotland for two weeks! We all were so sad to see them leave. They did end up with their bonefish pins! Amazing. They had a great time with Captain Sinoe - yes, several days of visual grand slams, but in the end, it's the "ghost of the flats," that won them over. Kevin and Lian were here last year, and they returned this year with eighteen of their family members! Wow. It was incredible to watch everyone soak up as much as they could about learning to fly fish the flats. Reggie - long time retired, had never fished before in his life. Any kind of fishing. Congratulations Reggie on your bonefish on fly. Dale brought Jon and George here to EP and they left with several bonefish on fly. They also left stronger casters! Terry and Gail - congratulations on your bones. Hena also landed several bones with Captain Raton. It was an honor to meet Karin Olson Wilson from Argentina. She grew up on the Majeo River which is world renown. She landed her first bonefish on fly here in Belize. Her son Matt and husband Henry ventured out beyond bonefish in search for permit, but were able to land a few bones in between hunting for palamenta. David and Donna were here to experience their first time fly fishing our Ambergris Caye flats as well. Donna is one of the most determined women I have met in twenty years of fly fishing. I'm excited about her fishing future. They both landed their first bonefish on fly.

PERMIT: The permit fishing has been challenging and rewarding! "Shino" landed two permit with Captain Cesar. He tied up all of his own leaders and Cesar said he is an amazing caster - "Could get it right there!" David had some great shots with Captain Kechu but they didn't cooperate.

TARPON: Shino landed a beautiful fifty pounder with Captain Cesar on his last day fishing before his wedding! Kaz landed a nice thirty plus with Captain Tomas and they had another one they lost. Ian and Andy tried several days with Captain Sinoe - they had good shots and tons of follows, but no eats. Kelly was a happy camper when she threw her live bait to Mr. Tarpon, and the water exploded! Her husband Jeff took this beautiful shot of her with her tarpon in the water giving it a big ol hug. Why not? The guides are reporting migratory tarpon down by Long Caye and some big girls showing at Savannah as well. It's tarpon season!

OTHER SPECIES: Dale landed a nice 15 lb snook on a red and white fly and offered a beautiful plate of my favorite eating fish in addition to dinner. Thank you Dale. Dale had a huge barracuda on fly�.if you haven't had a barracuda on fly; you are missing out on some serious fun!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, just about anything would work - mostly size 8 and 6, some with weed guards.

FOR PERMIT - Our standard never gives up: Orange Christmas Island Special in size 4 or 6, Avalon in size 4, and Gotcha's in size 4 or 6. Some crabs in 6, tan. Mantis shrimp, tan and bead chain eyes - it works.

FOR TARPON - Chartreuse toad, slow easy twitchy retrieve - depends on what the fish is doing. Watch and listen. On Savannah we are using 40 and 50 lb shock. Let the fly settle, and then move it. White, tan, pink - bunnies and toads. . Really fun tarpon fishing in skinny water right now! Favorite color - orange.

This Week's Summary:

The big migratory tarpon have been seen down by Long Caye and Savannah. Shino landed a 50 lb tarpon, Kaz had a 30+ lb beauty and Kelly got hers with live bait! Shino landed some gorgeous permit and there were so many bonefish landed we couldn't keep track. Dale landed a beautiful snook and barracuda on fly! Fun week!

We just love it when our "Family" returns here to El Pescador. Thank you Kevin and Lian for coming back this year with your family! And a big Welcome Home to Dirk and Kaz who have returned this week also.

Thank you Ed for being the best "job share" partner in the world. Not everyone can just run out the door and release the reins! I was traveling in the States last month working with our fly shops that send their guests here to El Pescador. We built strong relationships to help make sure our guests receive the very best. Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for getting Shino into two permit one tarpon and several bonefish this week. What was more impressive is that Cesar does not speak Japanese and Shino knows very little English. They communicated beautifully all week. It was great to see. Thank you!
