FISHING REPORT

Week of July 7 - July 13 2014

Weather Conditions: Mostly sunny skies prevailed all week

Winds: Windy to start the week at 15 mph out of the east calming towards the end of the week to a 5-10 easterly breeze.

Air Temperature: Mid to High 80's, for the High. High 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80-82 degrees

Moonphase: Full Moon on July 12th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Bonefish, bonefish, bonefish! Lots of guests got their first bonefish on the fly. Dan and Sara both got their bonefish and some great advice from their guide, Capt. Vince. Steve and Marival, David and Elena, Bill, Nick, Chris & Deepika, Stephanie, Patrick, Suzanne all fished their heart out and succeeded royally with the bonefish. Bill and his Captain (Luis) found a spot with some bigger bones and had a great time with them.

PERMIT (Palometta): Our good friend Bo got her third El Pescador permit this trip with Captain Luis on the platform, Kajsa was close but no permit for her this time to show for it. Magic was the best word to describe Marival's permit on a spin rod with Capt. Alex. She slowly started to appreciate what she had accomplished as she shyly told guests she caught a permit today� she didn't know it was so hard. (Don't you hate that!) Nick teamed up with Junior for his first permit ever on the fly. Repeat guest Bruce was fishing with Captain Kechu and spotted 4 nice permit about 70 feet out � he thought his cast was a bit short but Kechu said "good, just wait they're coming" a few seconds later there a fish tipped and swirled and Kechu knew he had the fly, a second later Bruce knew he had the fly and a nice 10 pounder came to the boat, his first ever and a dream come true - I love it when this happens.

TARPON (Sabalo): Lots of tarpon encounters with father and son team Sean and Mark making it happen with 4-5 to the boat over their 4 days of fishing jumping several more. Mark (Sean's son) had an 80 pound fish whooped next to the boat and as the guide grabbed the leader to land it, the tarpon had different ideas. It had one more surge and jump it was saving for this moment, breaking the rod first and the leader second. No one was ready for this last minute energy surge! Even Capt. Cesar was surprised! On their last day Sean got another fish out on the flats as a so long present. Bo and Kajsa got bit by some tarpon but couldn't get the fly to stick. Another boat (angler to remain nameless) had a 40 pound Kamikaze tarpon eat the fly hard 3 times on one cast! The leader was roughed up but it just didn't stick. "What did I do wrong?" he cried over a beer that afternoon� answer: Nothing, only 1 out of 5 bites stick! Only 1 out of 10 tarpon bites get landed!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlies, CI Specials size 8, Gotchas, the usual suspects.

FOR PERMIT - Avalon, bunny gotcha, Tan crab (I don't know the name)

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Green toad. Purple demon, cockroach

This Week's Summary:

It was a fairly quiet week here at the lodge with just 2-6 boats going out daily. Lots of repeat guests made it a fun and easy week. Fishing really picked up as the winds calmed.
