FISHING REPORT

May 26, 2013 - June 1, 2013

Weather Conditions: Big wind brought some unstable weather. Mostly sunny skies, clouding up later in the weeks with a few thunder showers thrown in! The breeze kept things nice on land but a little tougher for those out fishing.

Air Temperature: Heat index of 95F. High 90F Low 75F. Winds: Our prevailing wind is from the east. We had very strong E, ESE wind 10 - 25 mph most of the week. Now that the system down below us is moving, the wind is winding down to a manageable 5 - 15, East wind.

Water Temperature: Temps in the 80s

Moonphase: Last Quarter Moon May 31st

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: We are seeing some big schools of mudding fish which has been great for the anglers wanting "action" - especially when it was tough to hunt them without the sun. For the anglers wanting to hunt - we were looking for tailing fish as well as waking fish. Remember - when you see waking fish, you cast ahead of them.the wake is caused by their dorsal fins and tails, so the fly has to get ahead of them so they see it! The Cammer Family was here for their second trip and this time Nick was awarded a bonefish pin - his first bonefish on fly. His brother Sam got that dialed in last yearhis mother was hoping for a tarpon, but the bonefish kept her casting and double hauling.

PERMIT: The fish are here, but it isn't a "gimmie." Big wind kept anglers on their game casting to large schools of permit 5 to 20 lbs. We are happy to announce that Jim B. - owner of Cutthroat Anglers in Colorado - was able to land a permit with Captain Kechu. Of course, the fish ate a Christmas Island Special size 4 - our "rice and beans" for permit around here. Congratulations to Jim!

TARPON: It's tarpon fever around here! Yes, our migratory tarpon have moved in to the Long Caye area and the guides are saying they are seeing big fish mixed in with our resident tarpon over around Savannah Flats. Jim and Captain Kechu decided to go for the slam..Jim hooked a really nice tarpon right by the boat.Kechu went to leader the fish, the fish shook, and that was that. So close! Ellen asked Captain Tomas at the beginning of the day if they could go for tarpon. She had been catching bonefish and wanted a chance to "chase silver." They were in fish most of the day over on Savannah, and she was happy with her experience even thought she didn't get hooked up. Just seeing and casting to these fish is a big part of the experience. And yes, when you get that great big hand shake from Mr. Tarpon - it's something you will never forget.

FLIES THAT WORKED

The Avalon fly for bones and permit! Size 4. Chrsitmas Island Special is size 8,6 and 4 are our "rice and beans" for bonefish and permit here on Ambergris Caye. Orange, pink, pearl, yellow - they all work. We also like Gotchas is the same sizes for bones and permit. We do use floating crabs, and small tan crabs for tailing permit with both bead chain and lead eyes. Most of our permit are caught on shrimp patterns. Savannah Flats/Mosquito Flats - 3/0 chartreuse toads, bunnies, tan and white working as well. We have a new olive toad that has been very successful. Long Caye - black death 5/0, Olive toads 5/0, Chartreuse bunnies 5/0.

Guide of the week: Captain Kechu for guiding Jim and Dee into some nice permit water - and getting one to the boat!

This Week's Summary:

It's great to welcome back Nick from Australia! He and Captain Tomas have a plan to do some damage with an arsenal of fly rods and fly boxes that are exploding with flies. The Cammer Family came back and this is a family that fishes together! Jim and Dee brought their group from Cutthroat Anglers - and the whole group has been a delight. We have been double hauling into the wind during casting clinics in the afternoon, and believe me, these anglers are leaving here with fishing memories and a double haul that will be the envy of all their angling friends back home. Mark brought out the vice and started tying up some beauty's for bones - his spontaneity had other anglers joining him around the vice for some creative patterns and new tricks. Ken and Megan ripped it up with Captain Jr. on spin and they are already looking forward to returning next year. A couple of highlights for me - Matt, age 8, figured out right away he needed to catch a bonefish so he could receive a bonefish pin before they go back home. He showed up an hour after arriving with his spin rod in hand - grabbed some shrimp from me and made it happen. I have no idea how many species he has landed this trip. My dear friends, Janet and Don were here and they learned how to fly fish! They love to fish, so this is a whole new chapter for them. It was their first international trip and they had a blast. Thank you to our El Pescador Family for a great week and helping our anglers meet their dreams.
